I offer tutoring in GCSE English Language and GCSE Combined Science — particularly for students looking to build confidence and make progress — as well as English and Science at KS3 level. I work as an Investment Analyst in Guernsey, where my day-to-day involves performance reporting, quantitative analysis, and communicating complex ideas clearly — skills I've found translate naturally into tutoring. I hold professional investment qualifications gained while working, and previously completed the IB Diploma, which gave me a strong grounding in both English and Science. I'm also currently studying part-time for a BSc in Economics and Mathematical Sciences with the Open University alongside my full-time role, so I understand first-hand what it takes to prepare for exams while juggling a demanding workload. I have a genuine passion for teaching and helping students build confidence in their abilities. My name is Ria Thapliyal. I am 21 years old and went to Ladies’ College Guernsey for senior school and sixth form and have almost finished my BSc degree but looking to carry on my journey in post graduate education. I am a friendly and approachable person who understands what it feels like to be hesitant to ask for help at school as it can be scary and difficult to admit. I have been mentoring people throughout school and university, acting as a peer mentor in sixth form and mentoring students on a 1-1 scheme at university on my course. Although I found school fun and enjoyable, I felt the jump between GCSEs and A Levels significant and I want students to know that this is normal and that getting support is more common than you think! During school I was Head Girl so I am very good at staying organised, punctual and motivated whilst balancing studies, sport and a social life. Balance is so important and that is something I will advocate to all my students :)

I'm a fully qualified Mathematics teacher with over 17 years of classroom experience, most recently as Head of Secondary at an independent school. I'm also an Edexcel examiner, so I know exactly what earns marks and where students tend to lose them. My lessons are structured, supportive and academically rigorous. I focus on building genuine understanding of the maths, not just memorised methods, and pair that with precise exam technique. Using my experience as an examiner, I show students how to break down questions, structure their answers and pick up every available mark. Over my career I've taught in mainstream secondary schools, independent schools and online, and spent three years working in SEN and PRU settings with students who have additional educational or behavioural needs. That experience taught me how to build strong relationships quickly, adapt my approach to each individual, and create an environment where students feel both supported and challenged. I keep expectations high while staying patient, calm and approachable. I'm very comfortable teaching online and use interactive tools to keep lessons engaging and students actively involved throughout. I teach A Level Mathematics, GCSE Mathematics, GCSE Further Mathematics and GCSE Statistics across a range of exam boards, as well as GCSE Physics.
